Wild River Caravan Park

 Herberton Wild River Caravan Park

This caravan park is in a bush setting on the outskirts of Herberton in North Queensland.

With new management in place, they have a program to level several sites for both caravans and camping.

Here you are not crammed in like sardines with several large and open sites, some with shade and some with bush gardens on the outside of the awning.

This park is quiet with very little road noise and a number of Australian native animals visiting every day.

There are two amenities blocks and a laundry with both washers and driers

There is also a camp kitchen with several choices for cooking and a television to watch while you cook

There is also a camp fire with a well stocked wood pile, particularly nice in the winter time but the summer time here doesn't get very hot.

I would recommend this park because of the quiet nature, amenities, proximity to major shopping center, the friendly nature of the management team and the natural bush beauty.

Lady Jane

I went for a visit to the Montalbion smelter site near Irvinebank in Queensland and under a shady tree was a grave site for Lady Jane.

Does anyone know who Lady Jane was, who were her mum and dad. It would be nice to know some more about her. I would love to hear from anyone who knows of Lady Jane.

Lawn Bowls

Yesterday I heard a bowls club described as,

"a feedlot for an undertaker".

A JUVENILE GRANDMOTHER.

A RATHER novel case cropped up at the
Central Police Court, Sydney. Henry Davis,
21, a carpenter, was charged by Emily Davis,
22, with having assaulted her. The prosecutrix was in appearance a mere girl, and she gave evidence with some diffidence. When asked by Mr. Abbott, S.M., whether she stood in any relationship to the accused, she replied," If you please, your worship, I'm his grandmother." "His what?" exclaimed the bench."His grandmother, sir," was the reply. This somewhat startling statement was subsequently explained by the fact that Mrs. Davis recently married the defendant's grandfather, who is aged 74. The charge was eventually with drawn.

They let anyone in here

This bloke took up residence last night.

Not very sociable, may have had a big night.

Don't think he likes me taking these photographs.

The Seventh-day Adventists will let anyone in, but definitely not on a Saturday.

A Gate less Golden

In my recent travels I passed through a locality called Golden Gate, once a prosperous mining community approximately 10 kms West of Croydon.

The only sign that a township existed here can be seen on the southern side of the highway marked by a number of metre high steel posts and a sign saying no camping. In the background is a small mound of earth which was the railway station. Travelers here should be careful as there is a single strand of wire strung between a number of the trees at caravan height.

The railway station that once handled a lot of passenger traffic along with the freight that was needed to support a growing community now lies dormant except for the passing of the tourist train from Normanton on Wednesday and from Croydon on a Thursday.

A short walk to the Northern side of the highway and through a fence onto a cattle station I found some more stark reminders of a prosperous past. These boilers were once used to generate the energy needed to raise the ore from deep under ground and be processed to extract the fine golden metal.

This area is fenced separately from the rest of the property because of the dangers these old diggings present to anyone who passes by, including the cattle. If you fell into this pit you would almost certainly die. It took a couple of seconds before the sound of splashing water was heard when I threw a stone into the pit.
